Bristol Children’s Hospital Story Competition with Storytale Festival and The Grand Appeal.
Paula Bowles, a local children’s book illustrator and one of Storytale Festival’s event hosts, took the Storytale Festival to the Bristol Children’s Hospital so those who might not be able to attend got to experience Bristol’s first ever citywide children’s book festival.
Paula has been a Grand Appeal artist for all the Gromit Unleashed and Shaun in the City sculpture trails since 2013. She has since been involved with the Grand Appeal, visiting the Children’s hospital with storyteller, Wilf Merttens, making up stories and doing ‘on-the-spot’ illustrations for the children to keep.
Teaming up with Wilf to take the Storytale Festival into the children’s hospital on 14th October 2019, Paula and Wilf met children on all the different wards. Wilf helped and encouraged the children to make up their own stories and Paula brought them to life with illustrations. The stories were then entered in to a ‘story competition’. Some of the wonderful stories entered were:
- The Battle for Food by Billy aged 11 about a panda and his missing bamboo.
- Coreyman vs Supercorey by Corey age 9 about a superhero and his nemesis + a werewolf friend!
- Harry Potter retold by Eli age 5.
- Stray Dog by Liam, aged 10 about a dog on the hunt for a bone.
- Alone by Siona age 13 about wild people, being stranded on a desert island and the importance of family.
- Superman and the Chocolate Cake by Phoebe, Aged 5.
And the winner is!
On 30th October a special guest, children’s author Tracey Corderoy – well known for her popular Shift McGifty and Slippery Sam picture books and young fiction – announced the winner of the Story competition, Siona age 13 with her wonderful story Alone! She read her own stories and did crafts with the children, before reading the children’s competition entries and choosing the winner.
All the children who entered the story competition received prizes from the Grand Appeal and a certificate from Storytale Festival. The winner received the certificate, book token and books donated by Tracey Corderoy.
