Refugee Voices with Elika Ansari
With all that’s been happening in the world this year with the war in Ukraine, there’s never been a more important time to talk about the refugee crisis.
Join humanitarian and writer Elika Ansari for this special event with food and music as she shares her first-hand experience of working in the infamous Moria refugee camp on the island of Lesbos, Greece, in the three years prior to it burning down in September 2020. Elika has turned her experience into a book called The 5 Stages of Moria: the Worst Refugee Camp on Earth, which gives a fascinating insight into the harrowing reality of being a refugee.
Told from the perspectives of a single mother escaping an abusive husband, a young man who falls in love in a refugee camp, a brave little girl who saves her brother from a fire, an aid worker trying to make sense of the injustices surrounding her and an unaccompanied minor, Elika’s book and her talk will reflect the distinct yet unified voices of Moria camp, the largest refugee camp in Europe. This eye-opening event is not to be missed.
This event is aimed at young adults and adults. Please be aware there may be some distressing material.
We are partnering with Bridges for Communities for this event. the charity connects people of different cultures and faiths, enabling them to build friendships and grow in their understanding of one another; supports refugees and asylum seekers, helping them to feel welcome and to rebuild their lives here and equips people to be bridge-builders and peacemakers, through cultural training and through skills-development. Their Peace Feasts bring people together, from different cultures and faiths, for food and friendship.
This event includes a meal, talk from Elika and some live music. We look forward to you joining us for a special evening!
