Co-founder of the Storytale Festival and author of time travel adventure trilogy Time Shifters – intended to run just one creative writing workshop for children at Storysmith and somehow ended up co-organising the festival!

Event Host

Bristol based Anna Hoghton is the author of middle grade adventure stories The Mask of Aribella and Orla and the Wild Hunt.

Anthony Burt Storytale Festival host

Anthony Burt

Event Host

Anthony Burt has worked in primary, secondary and adult education for over twenty years, and run inspiring community youth work, art, film and TV projects for children with SEND. He’s a professional slime-maker, qualified teacher, book festival host, and loyal butler to his cat, Watson. Anthony has been writing since he was five-years-old, and has written scripts for CiTV, Doctor Who Adventures magazine, Nickelodeon, and Disney.

Brian Frederick

Children’s book author, Brian Frederick, knew he wanted to be a writer at a young age, having won prizes and praise for his early stories. He’s now the author of picture books including Siggy Loves Sausages, Siggy the Soccer Dog and When Siggy Met Phyllis, inspired by the children and animals he meets.

Located in the beautiful city of Bath, Curious Universe pride themselves on creating innovative and exciting products in the areas of arts and crafts, books, stationery and toys. A talented team works together to design, produce and sell over 20 million products every year in 38 languages throughout 77 different countries. They constantly manage and update their titles to ensure they are sustainable and continue to educate and inspire our future generations.

Emma Read, Children's author and Storytale Festival Event Host

Event Host

Emma Read is a children’s author, creative writing tutor, editor and mentor. Her Milton the Mighty books for ages 7+ explore the themes of phobias, social media and bravery. Emma’s latest novel for 9 – 12 year olds, The Housetrap, has been described as Scooby-Doo meets The Mysterious Benedict Society via Escape Room.

Karen George has spent A LOT of time drawing and painting. When she was small that’s what she liked doing best. When she was a little older, Karen gained a first class honours degree in Fine Art followed by an MA from The Royal College of Art. Karen painted film sets for a while until, in 2009, she won Waterstones’ ‘Picture This’ competition to illustrate Freddie and the Fairy for Julia Donaldson. This means Karen still joyfully spends lots of time drawing and painting… and now she writes too! Other titles include Hugh Shampoo and What Happened to You?. Karen lives in Bristol with her family and Dr Calamari the cat.

Gabriel Dylan

Gabriel Dylan is a surfer, snowboarder, secondary-school teacher and children’s author. He’s a huge horror fan, having grown up on a diet of King, Herbert and Laymon. He is the author of YA horror novel Whiteout and middle grade horror series Shiver Point. He lives in the south west of England with his wife and three children.

Ian Brown, former journalist turned TV writer and producer (credits include Top Gear, The Simpsons, This Is Your Life and The South Bank Show), is now a children’s book author. His picture books, illustrated by Eoin Clarke, include Albert Upside Down, Albert and the Wind, Albert Supersize and Albert in the Air, plus the Hugg ‘n’ Bugg books Finding Home and The Comb featuring the characters of Bugg the Himalayan flea and Hugg a messy yeti.

Based in Bristol, Laura of Colourful Minds runs fabulously fun and colourful art and craft workshops for all ages.

Mr Brown's Pig

Puppeteer and kid’s party entertainer Mr Brown’s Pig has been teaching and performing for children and adults throughout the South West of England for more than 20 years. Brilliant birthday party entertainment, puppet shows, pirate parties, school workshops, character-based entertainment, events, storytelling and comedy. Based in Bristol, Chris has established himself as one of the regions most reputable entertainers, bringing colour and humour to all events which he delivers with enthusiasm and professionalism.

With successful runs of the show at Edinburgh Fringe in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2022, The Extraordinary Time-Travelling Adventures of Baron Munchausen won ‘Best Children’s Show’ at the Leicester Comedy Festival 2020, Best Kid’s Show at the Greater Manchester Fringe 2019, and was nominated for an Edinburgh Bobby Award at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2022.

Adam Ball, Juli Frances Taylor and Paul Carlon are the team behind their newly published book Amazing Albert the Hero. This beautifully illustrated rhyming story aimed at nursery aged children is a gentle introduction to potty training.

The Society of Young Publishers is a voluntary organisation dedicated to supporting junior and aspiring publishing professionals. We are run by a team of volunteers and host an annual mentorship scheme for young people, organise networking opportunities and run social events. We also offer CV and interview advice and career discussions as well as shining a light on publishing houses, job opportunities and the literary scene in the South West. We are open to anyone, of any age, interested in publishing or a related trade – or who is hoping to be soon.

Author and educator Vie Portland is the founder of Vieness, a Community Interest Company that teaches self-esteem and confidence workshops to children, young people, and women, in schools, groups, libraries, and organisations. She’s also the author of inclusive children’s picture books, Where Are We Going? and Who Am I?.
