Alex Cotter has worked hard all her life at daydreaming, while making a living from words: from bookselling at WHSmith and publicising The Booker Prize to copywriting and teaching creative writing. Raised in the North, Alex now lives near Bath with her family and one very chatty kitten.

A&K’s Playground hosts events and workshops which encouraging you to think and see the world more playfully. Their activities invite families to set aside time, to be joyfully immersed in the moment, connect with others and be creative. They use a combination of techniques when facilitating intergenerational play including world building, storytelling and varying play styles so that everyone is invited to tap into their most playful self, no matter their age.

Curiosity Connections is a network for people and organisations wishing to promote, support and deliver inspirational STEM education in primary schools across the West of England region.

Elika Ansari

Event Host

Elika Ansari is a humanitarian worker, writer, yoga instructor and the Founder of Little Lotus Learning Centre, a centre that runs activities for refugee children in Greece. She’s been working with refugees and asylum seekers in Greece for the past five years, and as such, she has had the (mis)fortune of hearing many touching stories about hardship and perseverance, which she touches upon in her writing. Elika is currently working with refugee youth in London and continuing to write books.

Jacqui Ham runs Acting Out, a drama company for children of all ages offering creative drama workshops and events across Bristol. They promote emotional well-being through drama, offering workshops filled with improvisation, imagination and fun.

Katharine Orton

Event Host

Katharine Orton was born in London and, after finishing a degree in English Literature and MA in Creative Writing, moved to Bristol. There she worked for children’s publisher Barefoot Books in Bath, as a copywriter, and then with stained glass – before leaving to focus on her young family and writing. Katharine wrote Nevertell while her son was at nursery and during his naptimes, and signed with her agent after taking part in the brilliant WoMentoring project. Much of her writing is inspired by folklore, fairy tales, and ghost stories.

Based in Bristol, Laura of Colourful Minds runs fabulously fun and colourful art and craft workshops for all ages.

Lauren Tobia is a children’s book illustrator and picture book author. She’s known for her work on the award-winning Anna Hibiscus series by Atinuke, the acclaimed Happy In Our Skin by Fran Manushkin and the popular Let’s Go… series of books by Caryl Hart.

Author Lou Abercrombie has worked in television as an Audio Engineer and then as a Post Production Manager before reinventing herself as a portrait photographer. She has written two books for children aged 10+: Coming Up for Air and Fig Swims the World.

Megan Chapman

Event Host

‘MCMC Spoken’ plus band. Megan Chapman AKA MCMC Spoken is a lyrical rhyming wizard. Her unique rhythmic style, and cutting content offers a mesmerising performance. Her poetic delivery is beautifully raw and captures humanity. She has headlined literature festivals. Performed in cities across the UK and internationally. At festivals including Glastonbury and Womad. She has also had her poetry published. She was featured in ‘A Space to Write’ published in 2015, a book exploring the writing spaces of Cornwall’s best-loved wordsmiths. Most recently post lockdown, 2021 she has warmed up the wonderful Dizraeli, and The Scribes, hip hop group. “Megan Chapman’s poetry is heartfelt and rhythmic. Playful and political, her Art is in the right place.” Anna Murphy, Kneehigh.

The Society of Young Publishers is a volunteer-run organisation supporting junior and aspiring publishing professionals across the UK and Ireland. They are open to anyone, of any age, interested in publishing or a related trade – or who is hoping to be soon. Run by a team of dedicated volunteers, their aim is to assist, inform and encourage anyone trying to break into the industry or progress within it. The South West branch is the newest branch of the SYP, having officially opened in 2018. They are the sixth regional branch, alongside London, Oxford, North, Scotland and Ireland.
